The Daily Lectionary
(The Daily Office)
The Daily Bible Readings provided here are
adapted from the Book of Common Prayer, used in the Anglican and
Episcopal traditions for daily church services. They are organized on a
two
year cycle and can provide a basis for daily devotional reading and
reflection. Because of their roots on worship, the readings follow the
church year beginning with Advent (Year 1 begins with Advent, 2008 for the 2009 church year;
Year 2 begins with Advent, 2009 for the 2010 church year).
Because these readings are adapted for daily devotional reading, they
do not always follow the Book of Common Prayer exactly. For
example, readings from the Apocrypha, which are included in the BCP, are
here replaced with other readings.
Why do the readings for Sundays here not match the
Sunday Readings for the Preaching Lectionary and Commentaries?

An Epiphany Devotional
The readings for Sundays in the Daily Devotional Readings are not the
same readings that are found in the Sunday
Lectionary Readings and associated
commentaries on this site. These daily devotional readings are
adapted from the Daily Office of the Book of Common Prayer
(Anglican/Episcopal). These are used for daily services of worship
and for morning and evening prayers on a two year cycle. The BCP
also has a different Weekly Lectionary on a three year cycle, which is
the lectionary for Sunday services of worship organized around
the Church calendar. Because of the different
cycles, the Daily Office includes Sunday readings that are different
from the Sunday worship lectionary.
For readings in Sunday services of worship and other holy days,
CRI/Voice uses the Revised Common Lectionary, which is organized
on a three year cycle. The RCL
enjoys much more widespread use among Protestants in general. Catholic,
Lutheran, and Anglican Lectionaries, along with the RCL, all
follow basically the same sequence for weekly readings on a Year A-B-C
cycle, although the passages sometimes differ between the various
lectionaries.
While the Weekly Lectionary of the BCP can be used for
preaching on the same three year cycle as the RCL, most
Protestants prefer the RCL for preaching. Not only does it give
more commonality between denominations, it allows a common focus for
other studies and curriculum (like UMC's "Whole People of God"
curriculum or interdenominational preaching resources, such as
The Text
This Week or CRI/Voice).
